Sungrow SH6.0RS Review UK: Specs, Price & Backup

Written and reviewed by Sepehr. See our editorial policy.
The Sungrow SH6.0RS is the 6kW single-phase hybrid inverter that turns up on a large share of UK solar-plus-battery quotes, and it is the model our own Sigenergy vs Sungrow vs Solis comparison treats as the reliability pick. It has never had a standalone review here. This one works from Sungrow's own datasheet (version 16) rather than retailer copy, so the figures below are what your installer designs the system around.
Sungrow SH6.0RS: key specs
The SH6.0RS is a transformerless, single-phase hybrid inverter with a 6,000W rated AC output, two independent MPPT inputs and a battery port covering 80V to 460V. It sits at the top of Sungrow's SH-RS single-phase range, which runs from 3.0kW to 6.0kW in one shared datasheet.
- Solar input: recommended maximum PV input of 13,000Wp across two MPPTs (one string each), maximum input voltage 600V, rated MPPT range 285-480V, and 16A maximum per MPPT.
- AC output: 6,000W rated, 27.3A maximum, at 220/230/240V and 50Hz.
- Efficiency: 97.7% maximum and 97.3% European-weighted.
- Battery side: lithium-ion only, 30A maximum charge and discharge current, and 6,600W maximum charge/discharge power.
- Build: IP65, 490 x 340 x 170mm, 18.5kg, wall-mounted, natural-convection cooled with noise under 45dB(A), and an operating range of -25°C to 60°C.
- Connectivity: RS485, Ethernet, WLAN and CAN, with iSolarCloud monitoring on app and web.
The datasheet lists grid compliance including G98/G99, the UK connection standards. If you're unsure how the notification process works for your install, our G98 notification guide explains it.
Backup power: the standout feature
Backup is where the SH6.0RS earns its place. Sungrow quotes a rated backup output of 6,000W (27.3A) on the grid-connected side, a switch time to emergency mode of under 10ms, and a peak off-grid output of 8,400VA for 10 seconds. That 6kW figure is the full inverter rating, so it can in principle run a kettle, oven ring and washing machine together, subject to your battery's own discharge limit.
That battery limit matters. The inverter's 30A battery port caps charge and discharge at 6,600W, but your real-world backup depends on how many battery modules you've fitted and their state of charge. Our home battery backup guide covers how to decide which circuits to put on a backup supply.
Which batteries pair with it?
This is a DC-coupled hybrid, and the product listing on this site pairs it with Sungrow's stackable SBR range. Sungrow's SBR datasheet describes lithium iron phosphate units built from 3.2kWh modules, in configurations of 3 to 8 modules, with up to four units paralleled. Check current availability with your installer, because individual SBR sizes have been phased in and out and Sungrow's range changes over time.
Because the inverter battery window is 80-460V, it is a high-voltage design. You can't mix it with a typical low-voltage 48V rack battery such as a Pylontech or Fox ESS EP5 pack, so you're committing to the Sungrow ecosystem. For the wider trade-offs, see our hybrid inverter buyer's guide and inverter types explained.
Price in the UK
This site's product listing shows the SH6.0RS at £745 ex VAT from a UK trade supplier. That is the inverter alone. A full installed system adds the battery, labour, isolators, monitoring and commissioning, which is why quotes vary so much. HMRC's VAT notice 708/6 sets a 0% VAT rate on qualifying installations of energy-saving materials in Great Britain until 31 March 2027, so a compliant installer should not add 20% to the supply-and-fit price. Our home battery cost guide breaks down installed pricing, and Sungrow's recent hardware increase is covered in our Sungrow price rise report.
Who the SH6.0RS suits
It suits single-phase homes with a 5-6kW array that want an established-brand hybrid with strong backup and room to add battery later. Sizing is straightforward: 13,000Wp is the recommended ceiling on the PV side, so even a large domestic array fits comfortably. If you only need a smaller inverter, the 3.0 to 5.0RS variants share the same platform.
What to watch for
- Ecosystem lock-in: the high-voltage battery window rules out most low-voltage battery racks.
- Optimiser support: the datasheet marks optimiser compatibility as optional and tells buyers to consult Sungrow before ordering, so confirm this first if your roof is partly shaded.
- Wide MPPT window: the rated MPPT range starts at 285V, so very short strings may sit below the optimal window. Your installer should size strings to match.
- Warranty: we haven't confirmed a warranty term from a primary Sungrow document, so get it in writing from your installer rather than relying on retailer listings.
- Three-phase homes: this is a single-phase unit; three-phase supplies need a different Sungrow model.

Verdict
The SH6.0RS is a sensible, well-specified hybrid for most single-phase UK homes: full 6kW backup output, sub-10ms switch-over and a wide 13kWp PV allowance at a trade price under £750. The trade-off is that you're buying into Sungrow's high-voltage battery ecosystem, so choose the battery as carefully as the inverter.
