Why this site exists

I co-founded Smart Solar Homes because the information available to UK homeowners researching solar is either too shallow or too sales-driven. This site is the guide I wanted — and it's backed by MCS-certified installer partners, so we can take things further than advice if you need us to.

Every guide and review is written and approved by me. I have a background in technology and have done the deep work on the UK solar, battery, and EV charging market — reading the specs, understanding how MCS works, how system design decisions affect real-world output, and how the incentive schemes interact. That research, combined with hands-on installation experience through our certified team, is what this site is built on.

Seeing systems across different roof types, shading conditions, and DNO connection requirements gives context that spec sheets alone can't — and it's where a lot of generic guides fall short. The decisions that matter in practice (inverter sizing, G98/G99 DNO notification thresholds, battery compatibility with existing systems) are things I've seen go wrong on real jobs, not just read about in manufacturer documentation.

How I write reviews

  • Scores are calculated from published manufacturer specifications using a transparent weighted formula. The weights are listed on the editorial policy page.
  • Long-form articles are AI-drafted (Claude) and reviewed by me before publication. I correct factual errors, remove anything I can't verify, and rewrite anything that doesn't reflect what we know from practice.
  • Affiliate links are present where products are genuinely affiliate-buyable. They are disclosed at the top of any page containing them and do not influence scoring.
  • Where we have real-world installation experience relevant to a product, I include it. The comparison scores are still based on published specs — but practical context from installs is noted separately.

How to reach me

The fastest way to get a personalised system recommendation is the get-quotes form — that lands directly with our installation team for triage. For specific factual corrections on a published page, email hello@smartsolarhomes.co.uk. For SEO/structured-data questions about how we model scoring, the methodology is on the editorial policy page first.
