Why these matter: A DIY solar install is roughly 70% panels, mounting and inverter — but the remaining 30% is the bits below. Wrong-spec DC cable, an undersized circuit breaker, or a non-MID generation meter can fail a building-control inspection or void a warranty. The kits and components on this page are the ones the MCS-certified installers we work with specify on real UK installs.
BS 7671 compliance: All AC-side hardware needs to satisfy BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) — this means double-pole isolation, RCD protection of the correct type, and certified consumer-unit interfacing. The AC isolator and DC circuit breaker we list are commonly accepted by UK installers and building-control bodies.
MID generation meter: A Measurement Instrument Directive (MID) certified meter is required for any application to the Smart Export Guarantee scheme. Non-MID meters will fail SEG paperwork — your supplier will reject the application until a compliant meter is fitted.
Common mistake: Buying generic MC4 connectors from a marketplace listing. Genuine Stäubli MC4 connectors are 4–5× more expensive than counterfeits — and the price gap is justified by the contact resistance, IP rating, and UV-stability difference. Counterfeit connectors are a leading cause of DC-side fires in DIY installs (see NAPIT electrical safety guidance).
