Ofgem's October 2026 Price Cap Rise: What It Means for Solar

Ofgem confirmed on 26 August 2026 that the energy price cap is rising again from 1 October. For a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit, the annual bill goes from £1,663 to £1,723 — a rise Ofgem rounds to 4% (3.6% precisely) that runs from 1 October to 31 December 2026. If you've got solar panels, or you're weighing up whether to install them, the number that actually matters isn't the annual total — it's the unit rate, because that's what determines how much every kilowatt-hour of self-generated electricity is worth.
What's changing on 1 October
The electricity unit rate rises from 26.11p to 26.32p per kWh — a modest 0.8% increase. The daily electricity standing charge is 54.83p. Gas moves by more: the unit rate jumps from 7.33p to 7.97p per kWh, an 8.7% rise, with a standing charge of 29.68p a day. It's the gas increase, not electricity, doing most of the work behind the headline 4% figure — which matters if you're trying to judge what this means specifically for a solar-and-grid-electricity household rather than the average gas-heated home Ofgem's typical bill is modelled on.
The rise would have been steeper without a separate government move: VAT on electricity bills drops from 5% to 0% for the same six months, 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 (gas keeps its 5% VAT). Martin Lewis at MoneySavingExpert estimates the underlying rise would have been roughly 6.2% without that VAT cut — so the two changes are landing together and partly offsetting each other. Why the unit rate is what matters for solar
Solar panels don't care about your annual bill total — they care about the price of the electricity they're displacing. Every kWh your panels generate and you use immediately (rather than drawing from the grid) is worth the unit rate you'd otherwise have paid. At the new 26.32p/kWh rate, a home self-consuming 2,000 kWh of solar generation a year saves roughly £526 over the quarter this rate applies, compared with roughly £522 at the previous 26.11p rate — a difference of about £4 across the three months for that scale of self-consumption. It's real, but it's a rounding error next to the headline “4% price rise,” because the electricity-specific move (0.8%) is far smaller than the blended dual-fuel figure Ofgem leads with.
Export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) aren't set by the price cap at all — each supplier sets its own SEG rate, and most SEG tariffs sit well below the import unit rate already. So the price cap rise doesn't directly change what you earn for exported power; it changes what you save by using your own power instead of buying it. Timing: this rise lands in a low-generation quarter
The October-to-December cap period covers the weakest three months of the UK solar year. Autumn and early winter generation is a fraction of the April-to-September peak, so a household relying on solar to offset the winter cap rise will see less benefit from a higher unit rate than the same household would in summer, simply because there's less self-generated electricity to value at that rate. The bigger financial relevance of this rise for solar owners is less about the next three months and more about what it signals: unit rates have moved higher for longer, which improves the payback maths on a new installation calculated over its 20-plus year lifetime. How this fits with the wider price cap mechanism
This is a quarterly reset, not a one-off event.
