Self-consumption is the share of your solar generation you actually use in the home, rather than exporting it to the grid. It matters because every kWh used directly is worth the full electricity unit price — currently around 24.67p/kWh under the Ofgem price cap — while every kWh exported is typically paid at a much lower Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rate, commonly 3–15p/kWh depending on supplier. Raising self-consumption is usually the single biggest lever a solar owner has over their payback period, and the first few steps cost nothing beyond a change in habits.

The baseline: most homes only use 30% of what they generate

Without a battery, a typical UK household self-consumes around 30% of its solar generation, according to the Energy Saving Trust — the rest is exported because panels generate most during the day, when many homes are empty or lightly loaded, and least in the evening, when demand peaks. Adding a battery that stores midday surplus for evening use typically lifts self-consumption to around 65%. The gap between those two numbers — roughly 35 percentage points — is what the strategies below are trying to close, with or without a battery in place. The exact figure for any one household depends on system size relative to daytime demand, occupancy patterns and how many of the steps below are already in place.

1. Shift your usage into daylight hours

The cheapest change is timing. Run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer using their delay-start function so they run mid-morning to mid-afternoon rather than in the evening — this is when a typical south-facing system is generating most of its output. Set immersion heater timers (if you don't yet have a diverter) to come on around midday. Batch cooking, EV charging and pool or hot tub pumps follow the same logic: anything that can wait for a few hours should wait for the sun, rather than running on autopilot in the evening when the panels have stopped producing.

2. Add a solar diverter for hot water

A solar diverter senses surplus generation — power your home isn't using and would otherwise be exported — and routes it to your immersion heater instead of the grid. It's one of the cheapest single upgrades for self-consumption because hot water is a load every home already has, and diverters typically cost a few hundred pounds fitted, well below the cost of a battery. 3. Charge an EV from your own panels

An EV is the largest controllable load most households will ever add, and smart chargers can be set to draw only surplus solar power (often called eco or solar-match mode), topping up the car for free during the day instead of drawing from the grid overnight. 4. Add battery storage to bank the midday surplus

Load-shifting and diverters only help while the sun is up. A home battery captures whatever surplus is left after those daytime loads and releases it in the evening, which is why battery households typically reach that ~65% self-consumption figure against ~30% for solar-only systems. 5. Pair it with a time-of-use or export tariff

Once you've raised self-consumption as far as load-shifting and a battery allow, the remaining export should go to the best available Smart Export Guarantee rate — supplier-set and currently ranging roughly 3–15p/kWh, with the strongest widely available fixed rates around 12–15p/kWh. 6. Monitor generation so load-shifting actually happens

None of the above works reliably without visibility. Most inverters ship with a monitoring app that shows live generation versus household demand, and many EV chargers and diverters have their own apps that show exactly how much surplus is available at any moment. A smart plug or two on the appliances you shift most often, combined with a glance at the app before starting a wash, closes the loop between what the panels are producing and when the load actually runs — which is often the difference between the 30% baseline and something closer to the battery-assisted figure, even without one fitted.

A practical order to tackle this in

Start with the free change — delay-start timers on existing appliances, guided by the monitoring app you already have — then add a diverter if you don't already heat hot water electrically from solar. From there, EV charging (if relevant) and battery storage are the two upgrades with the biggest remaining impact, roughly in that order for most households, since a battery is the larger investment of the two. Review your export tariff last, once the bulk of your generation is either used directly or stored rather than exported.
