UK Solar Installations Hit a New Record in 2026

The UK has already set a new all-time record for small-scale solar installations in 2026 — with almost four months of the year still to go. Trade body Solar Energy UK says 207,619 MCS-certified solar installations have been completed so far this year, beating the previous high of 203,697, a mark that had stood since 2011. 2025 was already the strongest calendar year on record, with around 269,000 solar installations completed across the UK. The record isn't just about retrofits on existing houses. According to Solar Energy UK, 55,773 new-build homes in England were fitted with solar in the first half of 2026 — 58% of all new builds completed in that period. That's a sharp rise from 42% in the last quarter of 2024 and just 16% back in 2021, reflecting both tightening building regulations and developers building in solar as a standard spec rather than an optional extra ahead of the incoming Future Homes Standard.

The government's response: a VAT cut on electricity from October

Ministers have also stepped in directly on bills. From 1 October 2026, VAT on household electricity bills is being cut from 5% to 0%, a measure the government says will save the average household around £45 a year, on top of roughly £150 of Warm Home Discount support already available to about six million eligible households.
