If you assumed a loft was the obvious place to tuck away a home battery — out of sight, off the floor space, already wired for a consumer unit nearby — new UK wiring rules say otherwise. From 15 October 2026, every new domestic battery installation must comply with BS 7671 Amendment 4, and its new dedicated chapter for stationary batteries rules the loft out entirely, along with stairways, landings and hallways.

What actually changed

BS 7671 Amendment 4 — the update to the IET Wiring Regulations, published jointly by the IET and BSI — was officially published on 15 April 2026 and could be used immediately. It then entered a standard six-month transition period, after which the previous edition is withdrawn. That means 15 October 2026 is the hard cutover date: from then on, every new domestic electrical installation, including battery storage, has to meet the new edition.

The headline change for battery owners is a brand-new chapter covering stationary secondary batteries — the first time the Wiring Regulations have addressed home battery storage as its own category, rather than folding it into general low-voltage installation rules. Mark Coles, Head of Technical Regulations at the IET, said the update reflects how “advancing storage technologies increasingly support the integration of renewable energy in our daily lives,” and sets out requirements for system design, bidirectional inverters, protective devices suitable for two-way current flow, and — the part that affects where your battery physically sits — location, ventilation and fire-risk mitigation.

Why the loft is out

Lofts tick a lot of boxes for installers under time and space pressure: unused floor area, close to the roof-mounted array, away from living space. Under the new rules, that combination is exactly the problem. Three issues rule lofts out specifically:

Heat. Roof spaces run hot in summer and swing to near-freezing in winter — a stress cycle that shortens lithium battery life and, in a fault condition, accelerates thermal runaway (the chain reaction that starts when a damaged lithium-ion cell begins overheating and is difficult to stop once underway).

Access. A loft hatch and a ladder is a poor way to reach a battery for inspection, isolation or emergency shutdown — both for the homeowner and for a fire crew.

Escape routes. A fire starting directly above the areas people use to leave the house, surrounded by timber joists and roof insulation, is the worst-case fire-spread scenario the rules are written to avoid.

The same logic sits behind PAS 63100:2024, BSI's dedicated fire-safety specification for home battery storage (published March 2024, ahead of Amendment 4). It independently rules out bedrooms and unprotected escape routes — stairs, landings, corridors and lobbies — for the same reason: keep the battery away from where people sleep and away from how they'd get out.

Where a battery can go instead

Nothing in the new rules bans home batteries outright — it's a placement rule, not a ban on the technology. Compliant locations include:

Ground-floor utility rooms — the most common compliant spot in a standard three-bed semi, usually already housing the consumer unit.

Dedicated plant rooms or outbuildings, provided they're accessible and ventilated.
Ventilated external wall-mounted enclosures — the fallback for homes without a garage, utility room or outbuilding, and already a common siting choice for wall-mounted batteries generally.

In practice, most homes already have a workable option without major building work — the rule mainly closes off the loft as the lazy default, not every alternative.

Does your existing battery need to move?

No — the rules are not retrospective. If your battery was installed legally and to the standard in force at the time, you do not need to relocate it just because the regulations have since changed. That's consistent with how every previous BS 7671 amendment has worked: compliance is assessed against the edition current when the work was done, not applied backwards.

That said, if you do have a loft-mounted battery, it's worth two sanity checks even though you're not obliged to act: confirm your home insurer knows where the battery is sited (some have started asking specifically since PAS 63100 landed), and check the unit's own fire/smoke alarm is still working, since a loft is exactly the kind of space that doesn't get walked through often.

What this means if you're installing now

If you're getting a home battery fitted between now and 15 October 2026, you're in a transition window — installers can use either the old or new edition, but any MCS-certified installer worth using will already be working to Amendment 4 by default rather than risk fitting something that's non-compliant within months. After 15 October, there's no choice in the matter for new installs.

The practical takeaway: if a quote or site survey mentions the loft as the proposed location, ask directly whether that complies with BS 7671 Amendment 4 and PAS 63100. The bottom line

The loft ban isn't a bureaucratic inconvenience — it closes off the one location combining the worst heat, access and escape-route risk in a typical UK home. If you're battery shopping now, budget for a utility room, garage or external wall enclosure from the outset rather than assuming the loft is free real estate; it hasn't been, officially, since 15 April 2026, and won't be an option at all for new installs after 15 October 2026.
