SolarEdge Inverter Review UK: HD-Wave, Optimisers & Pricing

SolarEdge is the name most UK installers reach for when a roof has shading, multiple aspects, or anything more complex than a single clean south-facing slope. Founded in Herzliya, Israel in 2006 and listed on the Nasdaq (SEDG) since 2015, SolarEdge popularised a different architecture from the plain string inverters sold by Solis, Growatt and GoodWe: a central inverter paired with a small power optimiser fitted to every panel. This review covers what that means in practice, current UK hardware pricing, the warranty terms, the mySolarEdge monitoring app, and how SolarEdge compares to the other brands we've reviewed.
How the SolarEdge system differs: power optimisers
A standard string inverter — the kind used by Solis, Growatt and GoodWe — wires all your panels together in series. If one panel is shaded, dirty or under-performing, it can pull down the output of the whole string. SolarEdge's answer is a small DC power optimiser (the P-series, and newer S-series) clipped to the back of every individual panel. Each optimiser tracks its own panel's maximum power point independently, so shading or mismatch on one panel no longer drags down the rest of the array. The UK product range: Home Wave, Home Hub and Energy Hub
SolarEdge's single-phase residential range for UK homes runs from roughly 3.68kW to 8kW. The current generation is sold as the Home Wave inverter (the successor to the original HD-Wave line, still widely referred to by that name), quoted at up to 99% efficiency on SolarEdge's own datasheet. Two variants matter for UK buyers:
- Home Hub Inverter — adds High Power Backup capability, letting the system keep generating and powering essential circuits during a grid outage when paired with a compatible battery, per SolarEdge's UK product announcement.
- Energy Hub Inverter — the hybrid, battery-ready model with a built-in DC-coupled battery connection, aimed at homes adding storage from day one.

Warranty
SolarEdge's standard inverter warranty is 12 years, extendable to 20 or 25 years depending on the model via a one-off paid extension registered within 24 months of shipment, according to SolarEdge's own warranty page. Power optimisers carry a 25-year warranty as standard. That 12-year inverter baseline is meaningfully longer than the 5–10 years typical of Growatt or GoodWe, and the 25-year optimiser cover matches panel warranties and Enphase's microinverter warranty — one reason SolarEdge sits at the premium end of the string/optimiser market.
UK hardware pricing
SolarEdge doesn't sell direct to homeowners — hardware goes through trade distributors such as Segen and Wind & Sun, so pricing below is what UK trade retailers list (excluding VAT and installation labour, which your installer quotes separately):
- Home Wave 6.0kW single-phase inverter: around £737 ex VAT, per Wind & Sun's published pricing.
- Home Wave 8.0kW single-phase inverter: around £938–£939 ex VAT, per Wind & Sun.
- Power optimisers (P-series): individually around £45–£55 inc VAT per unit from UK retailers such as Plug In Solar and Off Grid Renewables — for a typical 12-panel system, budget roughly £550–£650 in optimiser hardware alone, on top of the inverter.

That premium buys per-panel shading resilience and the longer warranty.
Monitoring: the mySolarEdge app
SolarEdge systems report to the mySolarEdge homeowner app (iOS and Android), which shows real-time and historical generation, panel-level performance data from each optimiser, consumption and, on Home Hub/Energy Hub systems, battery state. It's a genuine strength of the platform: mySolarEdge rates 4.6 out of 5 from roughly 4,200 ratings on the UK App Store at the time of writing — well ahead of the app ratings for some rival inverter brands. That said, UK reviews flag recurring complaints about batteries needing installer-granted dashboard access (sometimes a slow back-and-forth) and a redesigned interface some users find fiddly on tablets, so don't expect a flawless experience.
MCS certification and G98/G99
Any grid-connected inverter fitted in the UK must comply with Engineering Recommendation G98 (systems up to 3.68kW per phase, connect-and-notify) or G99 (larger systems, pre-approval required), and be listed on the MCS product certification database for the installation to keep MCS certification and Smart Export Guarantee eligibility, per SSEN's guidance on microgeneration connections. SolarEdge inverters and optimisers have historically been well represented on the MCS product directory, but as with any brand, always ask your installer to confirm the specific model you're being quoted is currently MCS-listed before signing — listings can change model to model.
How SolarEdge compares

If your roof is a single unshaded south-facing slope, you're paying for shading resilience you don't need — a Solis, Growatt or GoodWe string inverter will do the job for hundreds of pounds less.
