That is a real and growing problem, but it is a different risk profile to a rooftop system on a house someone actually lives in. For homeowners, the genuine exposure sits in a narrower, less-discussed window: the installation itself, before your system is fixed down, wired in and registered. Here is what actually happens, what installers and insurers do about it, and what to check before and after your panels go up.

Why occupied homes are a lower target than solar farms

Rooftop panels on a lived-in house are hard to steal quietly — removing them means working at height, in view of neighbours, for a payoff that is small compared with a farm-scale haul. Police intelligence shared across all 43 forces in England and Wales recorded over 70 reported solar-site crimes between January and August 2024 alone, with more than a fifth of cases involving over 20 kilometres of stolen copper cable — but that data, and the “fully industrialised” criminal networks it describes, is drawn overwhelmingly from solar farms and other unattended commercial sites, not domestic rooftops. The real risk window: before commissioning

The exposure that does apply to homeowners sits earlier in the process. A typical installation runs from initial survey to commissioning over several weeks, and during that window panels, inverters and cabling can sit on pallets in a driveway or garden, or be mounted but not yet electrically live, with scaffolding in place that gives easy roof access to anyone — not just your installer's crew. Security fixings: what installers use

Once panels are mounted, the standard deterrent is tamper-resistant security fasteners in place of ordinary bolts on the module clamps. If your panels are stolen

Report it to police and get a crime reference number — this is what your insurer will ask for, and what lets recovered, marked equipment be traced back to you. Notify your insurer promptly with the crime reference, your photographs and serial numbers, and your MCS certificate as proof of ownership and installation date. If your panels were individually registered with the manufacturer for warranty purposes, tell the manufacturer too: it prevents someone else fraudulently claiming under a warranty attached to equipment that is not theirs, and creates a further paper trail if the panels resurface.
