Plug-In Solar and the Grid: Can UK Networks Cope?

From 27 August 2026, plug-in solar kits up to 800W become legal to connect directly into a normal UK wall socket — no electrician, no dedicated circuit, no rewiring. Retailers including Lidl, Iceland and Amazon are lining up stock, and manufacturers such as EcoFlow have UK-specific kits ready to go. But in the weeks running up to launch, UK trade press and electrical industry bodies have started asking a question the retail headlines skip: what happens to the local electricity network when tens of thousands of households start feeding power into it with no reliable way for anyone to see how much, or where?
What actually changes on 27 August
The short version: BS 7671 Amendment 4 (in force since 15 April 2026) created a dedicated wiring-regulation chapter for plug-in generation, and the accompanying statutory instrument — laid before Parliament on 17 July 2026 following a DESNZ consultation — makes socket-connection itself lawful from 27 August 2026. A kit that meets the government's Interim Product Specification (800W AC output, certified micro-inverter, standard BS 1363 plug) can be plugged straight into a socket. The technical concern: current injected at the wrong end of the circuit
Domestic wiring was designed on the assumption that power flows one way — in from the consumer unit, out to appliances. Plug-in solar injects current at a socket partway along a ring or radial circuit instead. Trade coverage of the rollout, including reporting by Solar Power Portal, has flagged several second-order effects installers and DNOs are watching closely: localised overloading of ring final conductors when current is injected at multiple points on the same circuit, changes to how residual current devices (RCDs) behave, earthing arrangement conflicts depending on the inverter's design, and the fact that a plug can remain live for a short period after the panel itself has been unplugged. None of these make a compliant, Interim-Product-Specification kit unsafe on its own — they're the reason the 800W cap and the wiring-standard changes exist in the first place. The concern raised by industry bodies is what happens as volume scales, and whether every kit sold will actually be a compliant one.
The Electrical Contractors' Association put it plainly in comments to trade press in July 2026: plug-in solar will only deliver its promised benefit "only if the regulations are strong, the products are safe, and consumers are fully understanding the safety implications of DIY installations." Non-compliant kits sourced from unregulated online marketplaces — rather than the vetted retailers named in the government's own rollout — are the specific worry: a kit that doesn't meet the Interim Product Specification can bypass every safeguard built into the 800W framework.
Why the notification system relies on trust
Every plug-in solar system, however small, has to be notified to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) under the G98 Engineering Recommendation. Crucially, G98 is a connect-then-notify process: you plug the kit in, generate straight away, and have 28 days to submit the notification. The DNO cannot refuse a compliant G98 system — the form exists so the network operator knows how much small-scale generation capacity sits on a given local circuit, not so they can approve or block it.
That design works well when installers are the ones submitting the paperwork, as they are for a full rooftop system. Plug-in solar removes the installer from the process entirely. There is no professional in the loop to make sure the form gets filed, and no penalty structure built for a homeowner who simply never gets round to it. Coverage of the rollout has flagged exactly this gap: without a notification, a DNO doesn't know a generator exists on that street, on that transformer, or on that circuit — which matters for exactly the reason G98 was created, network balancing and fault safety, not for revenue collection.
Why aggregate visibility matters for the grid
A single 800W panel is trivial against a domestic supply. The concern industry bodies have raised isn't about any one household — it's about local low-voltage networks where dozens or hundreds of unregistered small generators cluster on the same street, transformer or feeder, all invisible to network planning. DNOs use G98/G99 notification data to model local network loading and plan reinforcement; a systematic under-count from unregistered plug-in kits doesn't cause an immediate fault, but it erodes the accuracy of that planning exactly as the UK is trying to accelerate rooftop and small-scale solar deployment more broadly. The government's own response to consultation, published in July 2026, confirmed a simplified G98 route specifically for plug-in solar precisely to lower the friction that leads to skipped notifications — an acknowledgement that the standard process wasn't built with a DIY, installer-free market in mind.
What this means if you're buying a kit
None of this is a reason to avoid plug-in solar — it's a reason to do the two things that keep both you and the wider network on solid ground:
- Buy from the government-recognised retail channel. Kits sold via Lidl, Iceland, Amazon and equivalent UK retailers stocking Interim-Product-Specification-compliant products carry the certification paperwork you'll need. The plug-in solar rollout is a genuine expansion of who can generate their own electricity in the UK. The grid-capacity debate happening in trade press this month isn't an argument against that — it's a reminder that the system only works as designed if the paperwork keeps pace with the panels.
