For a growing number of hours each year, Britain's wholesale electricity price falls below zero. BloombergNEF projects around 306 hours of negative pricing across Great Britain's wholesale market through 2026 — more than double the prior year — driven by wind and solar capacity growing faster than demand. In mid-June 2026, wholesale prices stayed below zero for nine consecutive hours on a Saturday, dropping to roughly −£25/MWh at the lowest point. It's a genuinely new feature of the UK power market, and if you generate or store your own electricity, it raises an obvious question: does this affect you? The honest answer is mostly not directly — with one specific exception worth knowing about.

What negative pricing actually is

The wholesale price is what generators are paid (or, when it's negative, what they pay) to put electricity onto the grid at a given half-hour. It turns negative when total generation — particularly wind and solar, which cost almost nothing to run once built — exceeds demand plus what the system can export or store elsewhere. Rather than switch off, some generators (especially those locked into subsidy contracts that pay out regardless) find it cheaper to pay to keep running than to stop. The National Energy System Operator (NESO), which balances the grid in real time, more often manages this kind of oversupply through constraint payments — paying wind farms to switch off when local networks can't move all the power they generate to where it's needed — and those costs are recovered from all billpayers via network charges, whether or not you have solar. Negative wholesale pricing and constraint payments are two sides of the same underlying problem: renewable output is growing faster than the grid's ability to move and use it.

Why your SEG income is protected from this

If you export solar under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), it's reasonable to worry that a negative wholesale price means your supplier could start charging you to export. That doesn't happen. SEG is a licence condition set by Ofgem, and every SEG tariff must always pay a rate above zero — suppliers set their own rate, but it can never go negative or drop to nil, regardless of what the wholesale market is doing at that moment. Fixed and standard SEG rates don't move half-hourly at all, and even suppliers offering half-hourly, wholesale-linked export tariffs are bound by the same above-zero floor. Wholesale negative pricing might, over time, push suppliers toward offering lower average SEG rates, but it cannot legally turn your export payment into a charge.

Why most household bills don't move either

The same insulation applies to what you pay for imported electricity on a standard tariff. Ofgem's own explainer on wholesale costs and bills is direct about this: suppliers buy most of their power months or years ahead through hedging contracts, precisely to avoid passing short-term market swings — in either direction — straight through to customers. A fixed-rate deal or a standard variable tariff, priced against Ofgem's quarterly price cap, simply won't reflect a single negative afternoon in June. A handful of hours of negative wholesale pricing gets averaged into a much larger basket of network charges, policy costs and supplier hedging that moves on a quarterly cycle, not a half-hourly one.

The one place it does matter: half-hourly import tariffs

The exception is a genuinely half-hourly, wholesale-linked import tariff, of which Octopus Agile is the best-known UK example. Agile's own tariff page confirms rates are recalculated daily for the next 24 hours based on wholesale market prices, and that during oversupply its "Plunge Pricing" mechanism can take the unit rate below zero — meaning the household is paid for electricity it uses in that window, with no floor on how negative the rate can go, only a ceiling (currently 100p/kWh) on the upside. This is where solar and battery households have a real, if narrow, opportunity: on a tariff like this, it can be cheaper — or actively profitable — to charge a home battery from the grid during a genuine negative-price window than to rely on solar generation alone, especially in winter when panels are producing little. A battery or EV with smart, tariff-aware charging can be scheduled to take advantage of these windows automatically; without one, the saving requires manually watching the next-day rate forecast, which is impractical for most households.

What this means in practice

Negative pricing is a real and growing feature of the UK grid, not a one-off headline — NESO and Ofgem data both point the same way, toward more of it as wind and solar capacity keeps expanding faster than flexible demand and storage can absorb it. But for the average solar household on a fixed or standard SEG rate and a normal import tariff, it changes nothing day to day: your export income is protected by Ofgem's above-zero rule, and your import bill is smoothed by supplier hedging and the quarterly price cap. The people actually positioned to benefit are those on a genuinely half-hourly tariff with a battery (or EV) that can be scheduled to soak up cheap or negative-priced grid power automatically — at which point it's worth weighing that option against your existing solar-charging routine rather than assuming solar is always the cheaper source.
