Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 Now Works With UK Smart Meters

Enphase Energy has expanded smart-meter compatibility for its IQ EV Charger 2 across seven European markets — Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK — announced on 3 September 2026 during the IFA Berlin 2026 window. The practical change for UK homeowners: the charger can now use data from a compatible smart meter, or a CT-based (current transformer) metering setup, to enable dynamic load balancing and solar-aware charging, without requiring an Enphase battery or microinverter system.

What actually changed

The IQ EV Charger 2 is not a new product — it already sells across the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand with up to 19.2kW of power output. What's new is metering compatibility: Enphase says the charger can now read data from country-specific smart meter protocols (Linky via the TIC protocol in France, P1/DSMR in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, HAN connections in Norway) or from compatible CT-based metering solutions in markets including the UK, to unlock two features: dynamic load balancing, which automatically throttles charging as household electricity demand changes to avoid tripping the main fuse, and green charging, which prioritises surplus solar generation over grid electricity when it's available.

Why this matters if you don't have an Enphase battery

Enphase's pitch is that the IQ EV Charger 2 now works in three configurations: standalone (using only the smart meter or CT clamp data), alongside an existing solar PV system (Enphase or third-party), or as part of a full Enphase Energy System combining microinverters and battery storage. For UK buyers, that standalone tier is the headline change — you no longer need to already own Enphase solar or battery hardware to get load-balanced, solar-aware EV charging from the brand. Jayant Somani, Enphase's senior vice president of digital business, said the charger "is designed to work with the energy system homeowners have today and grow with them over time" — language that signals Enphase positioning the IQ EV Charger 2 as an entry point for households that may add solar or battery storage later, rather than a product that only makes sense for existing Enphase customers. The announcement also references the IQ9N Microinverter, launched in Europe in June 2026, as part of the same wider push to integrate EV charging, solar and storage under one ecosystem.

What this means next to existing solar-and-EV options

No UK pricing or specific compatible smart-meter model list had been published by Enphase at the time of writing — treat this as a compatibility and feature-set announcement rather than a new hardware launch or UK on-sale date.

What's still unconfirmed

Enphase's announcement names the UK as a covered market but does not specify which UK smart meter generations (SMETS1 vs SMETS2) or third-party CT-clamp products are certified compatible, nor UK retail pricing for the IQ EV Charger 2 itself or any required accessory kit. Installation in the UK would still need to meet BS 7671 wiring regulations and, where the charger interacts with an existing solar or battery system, the relevant grid-connection notification rules. Until Enphase publishes UK-specific compatibility and pricing detail, treat this as a European rollout announcement rather than a confirmed UK retail launch.
