Segen Zopa Solar Finance: 9.9% APR Over 2–10 Years

Solar distributor Segen has launched a residential finance product with Zopa Bank, and it is a notable one for anyone pricing up an installation: Segen solar finance lets homeowners spread the full cost of solar and battery storage over two to ten years at a 9.9% representative APR. Announced in mid-September 2026, it is built into the sales process used by installers in Segen's network, so the finance is offered at quote stage rather than arranged separately afterwards.

What Segen and Zopa have announced

The headline terms are simple. The loan is offered at 9.9% representative APR over 24 to 120 months (two to ten years), and Segen says it can cover the whole installation, including equipment, labour and scaffolding. Segen has not published minimum or maximum loan sizes or a deposit requirement, so those details will come from the installer quote.

Who is the lender? Zopa Bank is the lender; Segen Finance (a trading name of Segen Ltd) acts only as a credit broker. Homeowners contract directly with Zopa Bank, and credit is subject to status and affordability. That matters if something goes wrong: your loan agreement is with the bank, not the installer or the distributor.

How you apply. Segen says homeowners get a personalised quote in around two minutes with no impact on their credit score, then apply through a Zopa link inside Segen's proposal tool and receive a near-instant decision. You cannot apply directly with Segen; the product is only available through its approved installers.

How much does it actually cost?

Segen has not published a worked example, so we ran the numbers ourselves. The figures below are our own illustrative calculation for a £10,000 installation financed in full at 9.9% APR with no deposit or fees. Your personal rate and quote may differ.

  • 2 years: about £459 a month, roughly £11,020 repaid (around £1,020 interest).
  • 5 years: about £210 a month, roughly £12,590 repaid (around £2,590 interest).
  • 7 years: about £163 a month, roughly £13,720 repaid (around £3,720 interest).
  • 10 years: about £129 a month, roughly £15,510 repaid (around £5,510 interest).

The trade-off is clear: the longest term makes the monthly payment easiest to carry but means paying more than half as much again as the cash price. Before choosing a term, work out whether the bill savings and export income would cover the monthly repayment. Our guide to solar panel costs in the UK shows what a realistic cash price looks like for your system size.

How it compares with other ways to pay

Other 9.9% products. This is the same headline rate as the Zopa-backed scheme Good Energy launched in August, which asks for a 25% deposit; see our Good Energy solar finance breakdown. Segen has not mentioned a deposit, but that is one of the first questions to put to your installer.

0% installer finance. If you can clear the balance within a promotional window, interest-free finance is cheaper. Our interest-free solar panels guide covers the routes available.

The government-backed loan. The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is designed to give participating lenders a capital grant so they can pass on lower rates. Segen said any such rate reduction would flow straight through to the homeowner once the scheme launches, but that is a statement of intent, not a current rate. See our Warm Homes Loan Scheme guide for the published caps and eligibility.

0% VAT. Solar panels and battery installations in Great Britain are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, whichever way you pay, so it lowers the cost you finance. Details are in our UK solar grants and VAT relief guide.

What to check before signing

  • Your personal APR. 9.9% is a representative rate, so a credit check may produce a different offer.
  • Whether the finance price matches the cash price. Ask for both quotes on the same specification.
  • Early repayment terms. Confirm any charges for settling early, for example if you later switch to a lower-rate loan.
  • Installer credentials. Finance approval is not a quality check; use an MCS-certified installer and see our home battery storage guide if a battery is in the quote.
  • Lender status. Verify the lender on the FCA register.

The launch shows how quickly instalment finance is becoming a standard option at the quote stage. For a broader look at spreading the cost, our solar asset finance guide covers the alternatives.
