Used Solar Panels UK: Is Buying Secondhand Worth It?

Secondhand solar panels are cheap for a reason. A quick search of eBay, Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree turns up used panels at a small fraction of new prices, pulled from system upgrades, decommissioned commercial installs and clearance lots. For a shed, greenhouse or off-grid caravan setup, that can be a genuine bargain. For a grid-connected home system, the maths is more complicated: secondhand panels usually can't earn Smart Export Guarantee payments, carry uncertain warranty cover, and are already years into their output decline before you've fitted them. Here's what buying used actually involves.
Where secondhand panels actually come from
There's a real UK market — active listings on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree show panels sourced from homeowners upgrading to newer, higher-output modules, commercial installations being re-fitted, and clearance stock. What's harder to verify is any single dedicated “used panel broker” trading specifically in decommissioned domestic systems — most of what's listed comes from individual sellers and small resellers rather than an organised reclamation supply chain, so provenance and condition history vary listing to listing. Treat every listing on its own merits rather than assuming a consistent source or grading standard.
What used panels actually cost
Pricing on the secondhand market is wide and inconsistent. Solar cost-guide site Sunsave's analysis of eBay listings found prices ranging from roughly £11 to over £500 per panel depending on wattage, age and condition, averaging around £95. Consumer advice site The Eco Experts cites a lower typical range of around £50–£70 per panel from Gumtree and eBay listings. Compare that with a new panel, which typically costs somewhere in the £150–£250 range as part of a full installed system (see our solar panel cost and savings guide) — the headline saving per panel looks large, but it doesn't include matched connectors, compatible inverter wiring, or any of the labour and certification costs below.
Degradation: you're buying a used battery, not a new one
Every solar panel loses a small amount of output every year, and a secondhand panel has already burned through years of that curve before it reaches you. Current-generation N-type panels from manufacturers like LONGi and Trina Solar now carry 30-year performance warranties guaranteeing at least 87.4% of rated output at year 30, with linear degradation of around 0.4% a year after an initial first-year dip. Older P-type panels — the kind most likely to turn up secondhand from a 10–15-year-old installation — were typically warrantied to around 80–84% of rated output at 25 years, implying roughly 0.5–0.8% annual loss. A panel that's already 12 years old under that older curve could be sitting at 90% or less of its original output before you've even connected it — worth factoring into any per-watt price comparison against new stock.
The MCS and SEG problem
This is the trade-off that catches most buyers out. Under Ofgem's Smart Export Guarantee rules, every domestic system claiming SEG export payments must be certified by MCS (or the Flexi-Orb equivalent). MCS certification requires every module in the installation to be a currently listed product on the MCS Product Directory, verified by an accredited installer — in practice, MCS-certified installers won't certify a system built from secondhand, delisted or unverifiable panels, because they can't put their accreditation behind equipment they can't trace. Several UK consumer-advice sites confirm this is the standard position installers take, even though MCS's own published installation standard doesn't spell out a blanket “no used panels” rule in so many words. The practical result is the same either way: buy secondhand for a grid-tied home system and you should assume no SEG income, ever, unless you can find and pay an installer willing to certify the specific used equipment — rare, and worth confirming in writing before you buy anything.
No VAT relief for DIY installs, new or used
The 0% VAT rate on energy-saving materials (in force until 31 March 2027 under HMRC Notice 708/6) applies to a business's supply-and-install or install-only service — it was never available for pure DIY self-installation, whether the panels are new or secondhand. If you're planning to buy used panels and fit them yourself to save money, don't factor in a VAT saving that was never on the table.
Warranty and safety: read before you buy
Manufacturer product and performance warranties don't automatically travel with a panel to a new owner or a new site — transfer terms vary by manufacturer, and many exclude panels that have been removed and reinstalled at a different property altogether. Ask the seller for the original warranty documentation and the manufacturer's transfer policy before buying; if you can't get either, assume there's no warranty cover left at all. There's also a real physical risk with older stock: hidden micro-cracks in aged cells, invisible without specialist electroluminescence testing, are a recognised cause of localised hotspot failure, which can degrade output further or, in rare cases, become a fire risk. A visual check from a marketplace photo won't catch this — it's one of the reasons installers are cautious about certifying used equipment at all.
DNO notification still applies
Grid-connection rules don't care whether your panels are new or secondhand: a single-phase system up to 3.68kW still needs G98 notification to your district network operator, and larger three-phase systems need G99 pre-approval. Skipping this step because the panels were cheap doesn't make it optional.
Where secondhand panels genuinely make sense
The calculation changes once SEG income isn't the point. Buying checklist
If you decide to go ahead with a secondhand purchase, get in writing: the panel's age and original installation date, the original manufacturer datasheet, any remaining warranty and its transfer terms, and — for anything grid-connected — written confirmation from an installer that they'll certify the finished system before you commit to buying.
