Octopus Energy has become the first major UK energy supplier to sell plug-in solar, launching its own plug-in kit days after the technology became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026. Priced from £450, the kit plugs straight into a standard exterior socket and needs no electrician — a first for a household name in UK energy retail. What's in the Octopus plug-in solar kit

The kit comes in two configurations: a single-panel bundle at £450 and a two-panel bundle at £650, both including VAT and delivery. Each panel is rated at 460W, measures roughly 1.8m by 1.1m, weighs around 22kg, and is bifacial (double-sided), so it can pick up some reflected light as well as direct sun. The two-panel bundle sits at the 800W AC output cap that defines the plug-in solar category under the new rules — go above that and you're back into full MCS-installed territory.

Each bundle includes a micro-inverter to convert the panels' DC output to mains AC, a choice of wall or floor mounting hardware, and a 5-metre cable terminating in a standard 3-pin plug. Why this launch matters

Plug-in solar was in a regulatory grey area in Great Britain for years. That changed on 27 August 2026, when new rules updated the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 to formally permit socket-connected solar systems up to 800W. Octopus is the first major energy supplier to bring a branded product to market off the back of that change, rather than leaving the category to specialist importers and DIY kit-builders. Octopus's Chief Product and Marketing Officer, Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, framed the launch as widening access: plug-in solar "democratises cheaper energy, making sure everyone can shrink their bill while helping build a greener grid."

That access argument is the real story here. Renters and flat-dwellers — groups that have never been able to fit a rooftop system — can now buy a kit, plug it in, and take it with them when they move. Octopus plug-in solar vs the rest of the market

Octopus isn't the only name in this space. Retailers including Lidl, Iceland, EcoFlow, Currys and B&Q have all moved to list plug-in kits since the 27 August rule change, generally in a similar £400–£950 price band depending on panel count and mounting hardware.
